We were lucky enough to be on Provo at just the right time of the month to go out on an evening sailing tour to see the famous Glow Worms. We were told by a few local people that The Atabeyra was the best to view this monthly event on. We were not disappointed. This 77’ traditionally rigged trading schooner reminded us of the days of pirates and adventures on the sea.
The tour sets out before sunset and takes you out along the island’s north shore. Delicious rum punch, beer and soft drinks are served as you sail leisurely along with the warm island breezes. As the skipper hoists the sails he commandeers a guest or two to help with the lines and the raising of the two main sails. As you mellow out and the sun starts to set he steers westward so that you can watch a spectacular sunset.
The Glow Worms are a small sea creatures that perform a mating ritual on the 4th night after a full moon. About 40 – 50 mins after sunset on that day the females come to the surface and glow a luminescent green to attract the males to them. The males also glow but not as brightly as they swim quickly towards the females in a zigzag path. Their courtship lasts only a few seconds as the females lay their eggs. The 10 minute display of myriads of tiny green lights that blaze then abruptly go out is a natural lightshow that is a true “must see” if you are visiting the island at this time of the month.
We thought the cost of $25.00 each that we paid was extremely reasonable, with drinks and snacks included, for a delightful evening cruise. The added benefit of possibly getting some fabulous sunset photos as well as Glow Worm spotting is too good to pass up.
